Custom software vs off-the-shelf: a decision framework
Most growing companies hit a point where off-the-shelf software starts to fight back. The question is whether to work around its limits or build something tailored.
Buy when the problem is common
Accounting, email, video calls, and basic CRM are solved problems. A standard product is cheaper, faster to deploy, and maintained by a vendor. Buy here unless you have unusual requirements.
Build when the workflow is your edge
If a process is unique to your business, gives you a competitive advantage, or must connect several internal systems, custom software usually wins. The upfront cost is higher, but you own the roadmap and the integrations.
Hybrid is often the right answer
Many companies get the best results by buying the commodity layer and building thin custom tools on top. A standard ERP plus a bespoke quoting or scheduling tool is a common pattern.
